Chronic pain affects millions of people worldwide, yet conventional medicine often struggles to offer lasting relief. Traditional Chinese Medicine offers a fundamentally different approach — one that treats the root cause, not just the symptom.
How TCM Understands Pain
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, pain is understood as a disruption in the flow of Qi (vital energy) and Blood through the body's meridian system. The classical text Huangdi Neijing states: "Where there is free flow, there is no pain; where there is no free flow, there is pain."
This concept — known as Bù tōng zé tòng — forms the foundation of how acupuncture approaches chronic pain conditions. Rather than simply blocking pain signals as many conventional analgesics do, acupuncture aims to restore the natural flow of Qi and Blood, addressing the underlying imbalance.
What the Research Shows
A growing body of evidence supports acupuncture for chronic pain. A landmark meta-analysis published in the Archives of Internal Medicine analysed data from nearly 18,000 patients and found that acupuncture was significantly more effective than both sham acupuncture and conventional care alone for conditions including:
- Chronic back and neck pain
- Osteoarthritis of the knee
- Chronic headache and migraine
- Shoulder pain
The researchers concluded that acupuncture should be considered a legitimate therapeutic option for patients with chronic pain.
The TCM Assessment
At NaturalMed, every patient with chronic pain receives a comprehensive TCM assessment before treatment begins. This includes:
Tongue diagnosis — the tongue is considered a mirror of the body's internal state. Colour, coating and texture reveal patterns of deficiency, excess, heat or cold.
Pulse diagnosis — twelve distinct pulse positions, each corresponding to a different organ system, provide information about the underlying pattern of disharmony.
Case history — understanding when the pain began, what makes it better or worse, and how it relates to sleep, digestion and emotional wellbeing allows us to build a complete picture.
A Typical Treatment Course
For chronic pain, acupuncture works best as a course of treatment rather than a single session. Most patients begin to notice changes within the first three to four sessions, with significant improvement typically seen after six to eight treatments.
Sessions at NaturalMed last approximately one hour and may combine:
- Acupuncture — fine sterile needles placed at specific points along the meridians
- Tuina massage — therapeutic Chinese bodywork to support Qi and Blood circulation
- Lifestyle and dietary advice — simple adjustments to support the treatment between sessions
