Nuno Pestana is a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine based in Newtown, Powys. He graduated from Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is a Member of the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine UK (ATCM).
"It is my mission to look after you and provide an alternative solution to your health problems."
Nuno's path to Traditional Chinese Medicine began not in a lecture hall but on the training floor. As a teenager, he immersed himself in martial arts, discovering through that practice a profound respect for Eastern philosophy, discipline and the understanding of the human body that lies at the heart of Chinese culture. That early encounter planted a seed that would shape his entire professional life.
After finishing school, Nuno made the bold decision to pursue TCM at its source — travelling to China to study at one of the world's most prestigious institutions in this field.
Nuno graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (成都中医药大学) — one of the oldest and most respected TCM universities in the People's Republic of China, founded in 1956. This is not a translated or Western-adapted programme: Nuno studied and was examined in the authentic Chinese academic tradition, alongside Chinese students.
As part of his degree, Nuno completed a clinical internship at a teaching hospital in Chengdu, treating real patients under the supervision of senior physicians. This immersive experience gave him a depth of practical training that is exceptionally rare among Western TCM practitioners. During his years in China he also developed fluency in Mandarin Chinese, enabling him to read classical texts and engage directly with the scholarly tradition of Chinese medicine.
Nuno's approach to every patient begins with careful listening and thorough assessment. He believes that no two patients are the same, and that effective treatment must reflect the individual — their constitution, lifestyle, emotional state and medical history — rather than simply the diagnosis.
He draws on the full breadth of TCM, combining acupuncture, herbal medicine, Tuina massage and dietary guidance as each patient's case demands. His treatments are informed by both classical Chinese medical theory and the growing body of evidence-based research supporting TCM's effectiveness across a wide range of conditions.
He has had significant success treating chronic pain, women's health and fertility, digestive disorders, insomnia and anxiety — conditions where conventional medicine often offers only symptomatic relief. He approaches complex cases with patience, rigour and genuine concern for his patients' long-term wellbeing.
Beyond his clinical practice, Nuno maintains an active engagement with Chinese medical scholarship and research. He believes that ongoing learning is inseparable from excellent clinical practice, and he continues to study classical texts and engage with current research in acupuncture and herbal medicine. He is also planning a series of seminars and workshops in Portugal to share his knowledge with a broader audience — from the curious general public to fellow healthcare professionals and TCM students.
Nuno consults fluently in three languages, making him uniquely accessible to patients of different backgrounds.
Nuno's qualifications are from accredited institutions in China and the United Kingdom, with local authority licensing for acupuncture practice in Wales.
